in defense of gossip

the supreme court has ruled that romulo neri is right to invoke gma’s executive privilege and to refuse to answer questions that might could would implicate his president and her fg in the nbn-zte bribery scandal.

as a result, there is no way now that we can get to the truth of the matter. so biglang all the talk about gma and her fg’s involvement in the corrupt deal is reduced to the category of gossip, as in tsismis lang, because it is unproven or unconfirmed, and never natin mapu-prove o maco-confirm. unless of course the court reconsiders and reverses itself, which seems quite unlikely.

well. let’s look at the bright side. at least all the anti-gma nbn-zte tsismis is an improvement on showbiz tsismis that’s mostly petty and personal. how great that we’re swapping stories not only about gretchen & tonyboy, piolo & sam, sharon & kc, but also about political figures gloria and mike, luli and joey, jun and cory, the bishops and romy, on matters of national importance.

the thinking about gossip is right:

. . . gossip can be a form of political resistance to undermine entrenched systems of power and domination. Getting the scuttlebutt about salary discrepancies, executive perks, kickbacks, nepotism, conflicts of interest and the like ”benefits those excluded from power more than it helps those who exercise power since the former have less to hide.”

sometimes, gossip is our only revenge. just as it might be brian gorrell’s only revenge on the sosi peeps who he says lied to him and cheated him and stole from him.

bukingan na!

ronnie zamora expressed my sentiments exactly: a pox on both their houses! while it was a rare spectacle having the speaker rant and rave on nationwide tv against the arroyos – mother, father, and sons, and oh yes, jose pidal kuno – who had clearly engineered his ouster, it was just as dismaying, though not surprising, to hear him practically admit that he had been covering up for gma all through, and since, the garci-tapes scandal of 2004.

the question now is, will jdv continue with the exposes a la son joey? that would be great, for a change, except he would be digging his own grave. and what about manay gina who promises, too, to tell more in the coming days? sey niya, araw-araw silang magkasama ni gma noong 2004. hell hath no fury like a woman (whose husband has been) scorned?  you go, girl!

heartthrobs piolo & sam vs. lolit solis

interesting the 12-million peso libel suit that piolo pascual and sam milby filed against lolit solis and her tabloid editor for intimating that they’re gay – said to be the first ever in the history of jurisprudence in the philippines and in the world.

usually kasi, true or not true, guys just shrug it off, hindi na lang pinapatulan, why fuel speculation, such as the biggest buzz of all: that it’s a publicity stunt to get them on the front pages and gossip columns in aid of promoting piolo’s coming concert and sam’s coming album.

sey ng isang gay friend ko in media: take note, for a 12-million peso libel suit, the filing fee is 10 percent, that’s 1.2 million bucks, only 600 kyaw each, which isn’t much, as promotional expenses go, peanuts kumbaga, lalo na for the kapamilya network, IF they’re involved. and, given lolit solis’ (har)batting record, even she could be in on it, har har.

makes sense to me. twould explain the timing, why now lang, e dati na namang tinitira-tira ng bading press si piolo, who has been linked to more guys than gals, or so it seems to me.

besides, it’s not as if the gay rumor has harmed piolo’s career, or sam’s, in any way. if we are to go by their many solo product endorsements and their series of hugely successful “heartthrob” concerts here and abroad, the two hunks have happily been making capital of it and raking in the big bucks. they’re bankable, gay or not, lolit or not.

i think piolo’s the most beautiful hunk alive. i don’t think he’s gay but he could be – interesting ang chemistry nila ni sam on cam and i don’t mind in the least.

neither do my gay friends. says one: i hope they’re gay! they’re such cuties. we need cute icons in gayland. puro manicurista at peroxide queens ang nag-leader of the pack! adds another: agree! enough of boy abunda. ngek. icon ba ‘yon?

martin & pops – the best revenge

when i heard martin nievera on the buzz last sunday, i just had to read pops’ tell-all interview in yes magazine that drove the man to tears.

i also googled it, anong reaction ng fans, and the overwhelming sentiment is against martin and the significant other. they think pops did right to finally speak up and tell her side, reveal the pain.

hmm. ito ba yung schadenfreude, ‘pleasure taken from someone else’s misfortune’? we’re just happy that they’re all still miserable?

i think pops has been too sensitive about the “monkey” business. i’m not convinced it was derogatory, maybe because i remember calling my kids monkeys too when they were in that young and irrepressible monkey-see-monkey-do stage. besides monkeys can be cute.

sana tinantanan na lang sila ng media. or sana she just killed the story outright, gave katrina the benefit of the doubt. puwede namang hindi patulan, if only for the sake of the kids. this can’t be good for them.

of course i realize that it was a straw-that-broke-the-camel’s-back kind of thing, patong-patong na ang atraso ni martin, time to get even by revealing all and getting public sympathy on her side. pa-martir effect, kumbaga.

but there are other ways of getting even. ika nga, “you don’t cut off your nose to spite your face” which is a warning “not to act out of pique or pursue revenge in such a way as to damage yourself more than (or as much as) the object of your anger.”

because martin is right. with that unexpurgated telling of the martin & pops soap opera behind-the-scenes, pops has killed their best seller of a concert loveteam that had survived the broken marriage and continued to thrill and and titillate pinoys worldwide.

check out reviews (MARTIN & POPS -the magic lives on) of their hugely successful concert at the mohegan sun arena, connecticut just last year. beauteous pops teasing martin, “nagsisisi ka na ba?” and the audience lapping it up. i thought that was the best revenge.
