Sir, what’s your take on the Maharlika Sovereign Wealth idea?
SIR: Hah. It’s the old coconut levy recycled to include everyone — OFW, govt employees, private sector — thru BSP, GSIS, SSS — as ‘contributors’ who will later ‘hold the bag.’
The straightforward thing is to raise income tax or VAT and just steal the money, but that’s too transparent. The sheep need to be shorn.
Glad that Medalla and Habito made noise.
Also, they won’t borrow $ because of the IMF/WB and the credit agencies — our borrowing cost will soar. So they turn inward. If GSIS and SSS can’t invest domestically, that’s bad news for local stocks.
The way out is inflation, which we already have. Perhaps the barometer of good economic management is low inflation. There’s nowhere to hide.
My personal view is that it adds insult (on the intelligence) to injury (the bread-butter of corruption).
