The recent closure of LBC Development Bank is an example of an irresponsible elite,the Aranetas. Plus, the appointment of Mar Roxas as DOTC secretary only shows the elites perpetuating in the regulated service industry such as telecoms, shipping etc

I would agree with Iya in that the elite are not alone. The masses do have their own corruption problems. As for the victims, only those with so-called victim mentality are irresponsible for me. But the influence of the elite on these is not lost on me. I would think the elite started the problems, while the gullible masses just play along; the elite plays around with the masses’ minds using mass media.

Yeah, yeah we have much problem as a nation, even the elite can’t or nothing much. We can always complain, but its not the solution. I think this has been a very big challenge for us Filipinos. Perhaps, we can never really stand up on our own if we don’t exert much.

Hi Angela,
I don’t know, but methinks these pieces are no different from the discussions around the time of Marie Antoinette of “Let them eat cake” fame. Then, it was the “republicans” vs. the “royalists.” Now we call them the “poor” vs. the “elite.”

Not sure that it is pure irresponsibility. If anything, the elite have passed all sorts of laws that are pro-poor (the Labor Code, the land reform laws, the party-list system in the 1987 constitution, etc.) but something backfires. The Labor Code actually raises unemployment while keeping wages low for the lucky ones (Gerry Sicat knows). Land “reform” simply creates lotteries where the prize is the not-quite Torrens titles that politicians give away. The party-list has become a freak show.

But the poor and middle class are smart, and I don’t mean the telco. Their way out is global and literal – get out, and send the money back, which makes lots of profits for Western U. That is why we don’t have the equivalent of the French Revolution.

At some point, the royalists won’t have anyone to kick around (sounds like good old Richard N), and those who left would have returned. That makes for a peaceful and latent “regime change.” The only problem is that it may take a while, a very long while. In the meantime, the families of OFWs are not exactly poor even if the usual statistics might tag them as such.

Thanks joserizalii for leading me to the link which reenforced my thinking that indeed the problem with our “intellectual,economic and political” elites is that their “mindset” is not fined tune to the interest of the poor because those power brokers,media practitioners and religious authorities who command influence are trapped/ingrained/biased with their own neo-colonial mentality where everything good about Western values in religion, political system,etc. are always superior. Until that mindset is not biased nor matching with the true development needs of the majority of our marginalized sector we cannot expect meeting of the minds. Like in economics, full employment is attainable only when demand is equal to the supply and we can achieve full development under this scenario because the true value or the “price” of the commodity is perfectly right.

i think we’ll see better days if there will be a successful elections next year. and when I say successful, there will be a proclamation based on the ballots.

it’s not just a problem of the elite. everybody has a hand on whatever we are suffering. so change must start from us.
