Just Jennifer

It’s been painful, hearing about, and watching the story of, Jennifer Laude’s murder unfold. It is sad enough that there is a murder of any person in the hands of Americans brought onto these shores on “legal business.” But to hear the Philippine President speak of it like it’s a run-of-the-mill death, like it happened in a vacuum, like there is no American Marine as who is the prime suspect, is the height of insensitivity.

    Why stop with VFA as the context?

    Jennifer was presumably killed by an American soldier who happened to be here because of the VFA that happened because of global power politics that happened because of the state system that happened because of the Peace of Westphalia because… how large do you want the context to be?

    Let’s just get Jennifer’s killer. That is how she gets justice.

    • @mb: I agree. VFA is not the issue. Both parties in the VFA as member of the international community recognize the UN Declaration on Human Rights in regards to judicial retribution as victims of crime. Geopolitics must not come into play to avoid unnecessary racial slur and emotional biases.
